No. We are a non-profit organization that promotes and develops Inuit art.
The shop assists Inuit artists in the following ways:
Most of the artwork in the shop comes from the North via the established community cooperative system, which directly pays the artists for their work before it leaves the community.
Artwork is shipped from the North to wholesalers in the South; we purchase artwork from those sources.
Your purchase from the Inuit Artists’ Shop helps support education programs run by the Inuit Art Foundation such as our Cultural Industries Training Program (CICP) and IAQ For Artists.

Since 1996, the Inuit Artists’ Shop has established itself as a reputable gallery and gift shop located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The shop is managed by qualified and experienced staff who have an intimate understanding of Inuit art, the cooperative system, and wholesalers, and who maintain regular contact with artists in northern communities.
The shop is a division of the Inuit Art Foundation, which is overseen by a board of directors, entirely made up of Inuit artists.
Carvingstone is quarried in various locations throughout the North. Quarries are, however, usually located great distances away from most communities, and require group expeditions, by land or sea, to find and quarry stone.
Expeditions are extremely labour intensive, expensive, and extracting raw stone is often dangerous.
The color of stone varies from region to region, due to the mineral content of the soil from which it is quarried, however, all carvingstone is of equal value.
There are many factors that determine the price of an artwork, including the reputation of the artist, the quality and complexity of an artwork, and the status of the Inuit art market.
The price is also influenced by the cost of shipping artwork from remote communities in the North.
Invest in what really “speaks” to you! Buy what you like. After all, you have to live with the artwork!
